10,000 steps. 150 minutes a week. Stand up. Go for a walk.
We love a number.
It makes movement easy to measure.
But movement isn't always that tidy.
What about two minutes?
Thirty seconds?
A few small movements while you're sitting at your desk?
Does it still count?
That's the question we're interested in.
First things first. There is a target.
For adults, the World Health Organization recommends at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity each week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity.
That's important.
But there's another part of the guidance that gets far less attention:
All physical activity counts.
And WHO no longer says activity has to last for at least 10 minutes to count towards our total.
Evidence using activity trackers has helped change the thinking. Movement accumulated in bouts of different lengths has been associated with health benefits.
In other words:
Movement doesn't suddenly become movement at minute ten.
So how much is enough?
There isn't one magic number.
Because “enough” depends on what you're asking movement to do.
A run isn't the same as walking to the kitchen.
Walking isn't the same as standing.
And standing isn't the same as making small movements while you're sitting.
Different movement. Different intensity. Different effect.
That's an important distinction.
Robori isn't interested in pretending a small movement is a workout.
We're interested in the enormous amount of time between workouts, walks and getting out of your chair.
Light doesn't mean meaningless.
Researchers have studied light-intensity activity too.
A systematic review looking across 72 studies found evidence that short, frequent bouts of light activity during the day can affect the body's response to prolonged sitting.
In experimental studies, frequently interrupting sitting with light activity improved post-meal glucose and insulin responses compared with continuous sitting.
A separate meta-analysis found that breaking prolonged sitting with short periods of light walking improved post-meal glucose and insulin responses compared with remaining seated.
And research published in 2026 looked across 53 studies of activity breaks during prolonged sitting.
Again, regularly interrupting sitting with activity produced better post-meal glucose and insulin responses than uninterrupted sitting, with walking breaks showing the strongest effects among the activity modes studied.
That's not evidence that every tiny movement produces the same result.
It is evidence that the space between “exercise” and “doing nothing” deserves our attention.
What about really small movement?
Now we're getting closer to MicroMovement.
Science doesn't currently give us a neat prescription saying:
Move your hand this much, for this long, and this happens.
We wouldn't claim that it does.
But the bigger picture is changing.
Physical activity no longer needs to happen in a traditional ten-minute “exercise bout” to be recognised as activity. Light activity has been studied. Short activity breaks have been studied. Even brief bursts of everyday non-exercise activity are now being investigated.
The old idea of movement being either a workout or nothing is simply too narrow.

Get up.
There will be opportunities to walk.
Walk.
And there will be times when you're stuck in the chair.
A meeting.
A deadline.
A lecture.
A journey.

That's the bit we're interested in.
